Addiction Therapy
Compassionate support to break free from addiction
What Is Addiction Therapy?
The goal: a life that no longer needs the substance. Addiction therapy is about far more than stopping a behavior. The goal is to understand what the substance or behavior has been doing for you, build other ways to meet that need, and rebuild the parts of life that addiction narrowed — relationships, work, health, and self-respect.
The idea: address the causes, not only the symptoms. Substance use and compulsive behaviors rarely appear on their own. Trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, and chronic stress often sit underneath them. Treating only the behavior leaves those drivers intact, which is why relapse is so common when the underlying causes go unaddressed.
The method: skills, insight, and relapse prevention together. Sessions combine practical relapse-prevention planning — identifying triggers, high-risk situations, and concrete alternatives — with deeper work on the experiences and beliefs that keep the cycle going. Motivational interviewing helps you resolve your own ambivalence rather than being argued out of it.

How Perspective Counseling Services Delivers Addiction Therapy
Counselors with substance use disorder training. Several of our clinicians have specific substance use disorder training and years of experience in addiction treatment settings, alongside their general clinical licensure. That means your therapist can hold both the addiction and the mental health picture at once, instead of treating them as separate problems.
Individual work, with group and psychiatric support when it helps. Most addiction work here happens in individual sessions. When it would help, we can coordinate with our group offerings or with our psychiatric nurse practitioners for medication support, so co-occurring anxiety, depression, or ADHD is treated alongside the recovery work. Care is available in Millcreek, Farmington, and by telehealth statewide.

Key Benefits of Addiction Therapy

-
A plan for the moments that matter. You leave with concrete relapse-prevention strategies for the specific triggers and situations that put your recovery at risk.
-
Co-occurring concerns treated together. Anxiety, depression, trauma, and ADHD are addressed alongside the substance use rather than deferred until later.
-
Judgment-free honesty. A confidential space where you can be truthful about where you actually are, which is where useful work starts.
-
Relationships that can begin to heal. Therapy makes room to repair the trust and communication that addiction strained, including work with partners and families.
-
Support that adjusts as you go. Session frequency and focus change as your recovery stabilises, rather than following a fixed program schedule.
