Couples Counseling

Reconnect with your partner and build a stronger, healthier relationship

WHAT IT IS

What Is Couples Counseling?

The goal: change the pattern between you, not the person across from you. Couples counseling treats the relationship as the client. The work is to understand the cycle the two of you fall into — pursue and withdraw, criticise and defend — and to build a different one, rather than to determine who is right.

The idea: most conflicts are about connection, not content. Arguments about chores, money, or in-laws are usually carrying a deeper question: can I count on you, do I matter to you, am I safe here. Naming that layer changes what the argument is actually about.

The method: structured conversation with a third person in the room. Sessions slow conflict down enough to be useful. Your therapist interrupts escalation, helps each of you say the thing underneath the complaint, and teaches concrete communication and repair skills you practise between sessions.

OUR APPROACH

How Perspective Counseling Services Delivers Couples Counseling

Gottman Method and attachment-based work. Our couples clinicians draw on the Gottman Method and on attachment theory, and several also specialise in betrayal trauma, healthy sexuality, and coparenting — the situations that most often bring couples in.

Both partners get an intake. Couples work begins with an intake session for the relationship, and your therapist may also meet with each partner individually early on. Sessions are available at both offices and by telehealth. Private-pay couples rates are listed on our insurance page.

WHY IT HELPS

Key Benefits of Couples Counseling

Two people walking side by side
  • Arguments that go somewhere. Conflict becomes a conversation with a resolution rather than the same loop replayed at higher volume.

  • A shared understanding of the cycle. Once both partners can name the pattern as it starts, either one can interrupt it.

  • Repair after rupture. You learn how to come back from a bad exchange, which matters more for long-term stability than avoiding conflict.

  • Space for the harder subjects. Intimacy, betrayal, parenting differences, and finances become discussable with a neutral third person present.

  • Clarity either way. Some couples rebuild; some decide to separate well. Both are legitimate outcomes, and therapy supports whichever is right for you.
