Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Release the weight of traumatic memories and find lasting relief
What Is EMDR?
The goal: memories that no longer hijack the present. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing helps the brain finish processing experiences that got stuck. The memory does not disappear — it stops carrying the same charge, so recalling it no longer drops you back into the moment it happened.
The idea: some memories were never fully filed. Overwhelming experiences can be stored with the original images, body sensations, and beliefs still attached. EMDR gives the brain the conditions to reprocess them into ordinary memory, the way it does with most of what happens to us.
The method: bilateral stimulation while you hold the memory. You focus briefly on a target memory while your therapist guides bilateral stimulation — eye movements, taps, or tones — in short sets, checking in between each one. You are in control throughout, and you do not have to narrate the details aloud.

How Perspective Counseling Services Delivers EMDR
A deep bench of EMDR-trained clinicians. EMDR is one of the most widely held trainings on our team, so we can usually match you with an EMDR clinician whose other specialties — complex trauma, grief, addiction, children and teens, faith transitions — also fit your situation.
Stabilisation before reprocessing. We do not start reprocessing in session one. Early work builds the resourcing and regulation skills that make EMDR safe and tolerable, and we set the pace with you. Available at both offices and, for suitable clients, by telehealth.

Key Benefits of EMDR

-
You do not have to retell everything. EMDR requires far less verbal description of the traumatic event than most trauma therapies, which lowers the barrier considerably.
-
Often faster than talk therapy alone. Many people notice a shift in how a specific memory feels within a handful of reprocessing sessions.
-
Change you can feel in the body. Reprocessing typically reduces the physical startle, tension, and dread attached to a memory, not just the thoughts about it.
-
Well beyond single-incident trauma. EMDR is used for complex and developmental trauma, grief, anxiety, phobias, and the shame that trauma leaves behind.
-
A strongly evidence-based approach. EMDR is an established, well-researched treatment for post-traumatic stress.
