Breathwork

Work with your breath to settle your nervous system and expand your capacity

WHAT IT IS

What Is Breathwork?

The goal: work directly with your nervous system. Breathwork uses guided, intentional breathing to reach the part of you that talking cannot instruct. Where therapy helps you understand your patterns, breathwork works with the physical state underneath them — the tension, the bracing, the flatness — so understanding and felt experience can finally move together.

The idea: your breath changes your state. Slow, paced techniques such as diaphragmatic and coherent breathing engage the body's rest-and-digest response, easing the physical grip of stress. Longer conscious connected breathing does something different: it opens access to emotions and sensations that talking alone can't always reach.

The method: guided practice, at a pace you set. A session begins with a conversation about what you are bringing in and a review of any health considerations — a few conditions, such as uncontrolled high blood pressure or a recent acute trauma response, call for a gentler approach or a check-in with your provider first. From there your facilitator guides you through breathing practices suited to that day, with room to slow down, rest, or return to ordinary breathing. Sessions close with time to settle and make sense of what came up.

OUR APPROACH

How Perspective Counseling Services Delivers Breathwork

Trauma-informed and client-led, every session. We review your health history before we begin, you set the pace, and you are free to adjust, pause, open your eyes, or stop at any point. You stay the authority on your own body — which matters most for the people this work tends to help.

Alongside the therapy you are already doing. Breathwork pairs especially well with therapy, and with your permission your facilitator can coordinate directly with your therapist so the two reinforce each other. Sessions are led by our clinical breathwork facilitator at our Millcreek office.

Practices you can take with you. You leave with simple breathing practices you can use on your own, so the regulation you find in session is something you can return to between appointments.

WHY IT HELPS

Key Benefits of Breathwork

Person breathing deeply outdoors in early morning light
  • Regulation you can feel. Slow, paced breathing engages the rest-and-digest response, easing the physical grip of stress in the moment and building steadier baseline calm over time.

  • A deeper way in. When you understand your patterns but still feel stuck in them, breathwork reaches the emotions and body sensations that talking alone can't always access.

  • Support for stress, anxiety, and low mood. Research on breathwork points to meaningful reductions in stress, anxiety, and low mood.

  • You stay in control throughout. Every session is client-led — you set the pace and can adjust, pause, or stop at any point, which is itself part of what makes the work feel safe.

  • It strengthens your other care. Coordinated with your therapist, breathwork keeps sessions intentional and complements the work you are already doing rather than running parallel to it.
