Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance-based therapy to live a more meaningful life

WHAT IT IS

What Is ACT?

The goal: build psychological flexibility. ACT (pronounced as one word, "act") is a form of talk therapy built around a single core goal: helping you respond to life's challenges with more flexibility. Instead of measuring progress by how many negative thoughts or feelings disappear, ACT measures progress by how fully you are able to live according to what matters most to you.

The idea: stop fighting difficult thoughts and feelings. Most of us try to push away worry, sadness, or pain. ACT takes a different approach. It teaches you to make room for those experiences instead of struggling against them — because the struggle itself often makes things harder, not easier.

The method: mindfulness paired with values-driven action. Sessions combine two things: mindfulness skills that help you notice thoughts and feelings without getting stuck in them, and practical exercises that connect your everyday choices to your personal values. Over time, you build the skill of acting on what matters, even when uncomfortable thoughts or emotions show up.

OUR APPROACH

How Perspective Counseling Services Delivers ACT

One-on-one sessions built around your goals. ACT is delivered through individual counseling sessions with a therapist trained in the approach. Early sessions focus on identifying your core values and the patterns that have been holding you back. Later sessions build practical skills — mindfulness exercises, thought-defusion techniques, and values-based action planning — that you practice both in session and in daily life.

In person at either office, or by telehealth anywhere in Utah. You can meet at our Millcreek or Farmington office, or connect by telehealth from anywhere in the state. Several of our clinicians work from an ACT framework, so we can match you with a therapist whose focus areas line up with what brought you in.

WHY IT HELPS

Key Benefits of ACT

  • Eases anxiety and depression. Research shows ACT reduces anxiety and depression symptoms about as effectively as traditional cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

  • Helps even when the problem doesn't fully go away. For chronic pain and other ongoing struggles, ACT improves daily functioning and quality of life — even when the underlying pain or difficulty remains.

  • Builds skills that last. Because ACT focuses on flexibility rather than eliminating specific symptoms, the skills you learn carry into future challenges long after therapy ends.

  • Works well when other approaches haven't. ACT can be a strong fit if you've tried therapy that focuses on changing your thoughts and found it didn't click.

  • Backed by decades of research. ACT is a well-studied, evidence-based approach used for anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and stress-related conditions.
